WooCommerce cohort analysis
Group your customers by the month they first ordered. Then see how many came back in each month after.
The question
“Of the customers who first ordered in a month, how many ordered again?”
Ask it in your own words. You get the answer, with the steps that made it.
What in your data answers it
These are the fields the connector reads.
| Stream | Field | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| orders | customer_id | Who placed the order. Guests may show no id. |
| orders | customer_key | A one-way code made from the billing email, so we can tell repeat buyers apart without seeing the email. |
| orders | date | When the order was placed. |
| orders | total | What the order came to. |
Orders default to the last 30 days. Ask for a longer window to see months of return visits.
A real sample report
This sample report runs the same method on public online-store order data (UCI Online Retail II). It is not WooCommerce data. A WooCommerce order has the same shape: a customer, a date and an amount.
Other questions to ask
- “Which month's first-time buyers came back the most?”
- “How many customers ordered more than once?”

Questions
What about guest checkouts?
A guest order may have no customer id. The customer key, a one-way code from the billing email, lets repeat guests be counted as one person.
Do you see customer emails?
No. The email is turned into a one-way code before it is saved.
Does it change my store?
No. We only read.
