How it works

Groups customers by when they first purchased, then tracks what percentage remain active in each following month. Shows retention curves per cohort so you can see if newer cohorts retain better or worse than older ones.

Use this when you have transaction or activity data with customer IDs and dates, and want to understand how retention changes over time and across cohorts.

If you're predicting which specific customers will churn (not measuring historical retention), use churn prediction. If you need revenue cohorts (not count-based), check MRR analysis.

Built for: Product manager, growth lead, SaaS founder, customer success manager

Typical data source: Transaction log, event log, or subscription data with customer ID, date, and optionally revenue per transaction

What's in the report?

Groups customers by their first purchase month (cohort) and tracks what percentage return in subsequent months. Produces a retention heatmap, cohort size trend, and average retention curve to identify when customers drop off and which cohorts perform best.

🟧

Retention Heatmap

Each row is a cohort (month of first purchase). Each column is months since first purchase. Darker cells = higher retention. Look for the 'smile' pattern — early drop-off that stabilizes. Compare rows to see if newer cohorts retain better.

📊

Cohort Sizes

How many customers joined each month. Helps contextualize retention — a 90% retention rate in a 10-person cohort means less than in a 1000-person cohort.

📈

Average Retention Curve

Mean retention rate across all cohorts by period
